About 35 miles east of Safford, Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area combines two very different kinds of desert recreation: rugged off-highway vehicle riding across more than 2,000 acres of sand dunes, and a relaxing soak in naturally heated water. The BLM manages the site, which draws OHV and ATV riders for its open dune terrain, while a solar-powered pump feeds two artesian-well hot tubs at the campground, giving visitors a surreal, low-key soak under open desert sky after a day of riding or exploring.
What to Bring and Expect
Because the site is remote — about 35 miles from Safford — visitors should arrive prepared with fuel, water, food, and any OHV parts or tools they might need, since services are minimal on site. Camping is available at Hot Well Dunes, and many visitors plan multi-day trips that combine riding the dunes during the day with soaking in the hot tubs in the evening and at night, when desert skies are especially clear for stargazing. Weather and dune conditions can vary, so checking current BLM guidance before heading out, especially in extreme summer heat, is a good idea.
Getting There
The drive to Hot Well Dunes typically follows a mix of paved and unpaved roads east of Safford, so a vehicle in good condition and a full tank of fuel are recommended given the distance from town. The recreation area's blend of OHV riding and geothermal soaking makes it one of the more distinctive destinations in the Gila Valley, offering a different kind of desert experience than the river and mountain sites closer to Safford, such as the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, which lies in the same general direction east of town. Many riders and campers treat Hot Well Dunes as an overnight or weekend destination, taking advantage of the open desert sky for stargazing once the dunes go quiet after sunset.
