Black Hills Backcountry Byway

North of the Gila Valley, the Black Hills Backcountry Byway follows maintained gravel and dirt roads through volcanic hills, open rangeland, and historic ranching country — a slower, wilder counterpoint to the paved climb up Swift Trail Parkway. Pronghorn, mule deer, javelina, and raptors are common sightings along the route, which carries no services, so travelers should set out with a full tank, water, and supplies. Most explore the byway in a few hours, best planned for spring, fall, or winter when temperatures are mildest.
