HYPE GUIDE: The Gila Valley 250
A dawn-to-dusk rundown of the valley-wide Independence Day festivities this July 4th, 2026.

The Fourth of July is a hallmark of summer in our community, but 2026 brings something monumental. We are celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence with the "Gila Valley 250"—a massive, unified celebration spanning Safford, Thatcher, and Pima. From the first casting line at the crack of dawn to the final firework echoing against Mount Graham, here is your curated guide to experiencing the historic day.

The Morning Traditions
5:00 AM – Early Wake-Up & Fishing Derby: Start the day before the desert heat sets in. The Thatcher Fire Department will be sounding off a patriotic wake-up call, perfectly timed for families heading to the 52nd Annual Moe Villalba Sr. Fishing Derby at the Graham County Fairgrounds duck ponds. (Free for kids!)

5:30 AM – The People's Parade: A hyper-local, grassroots tradition. Grab the family, decorate the bikes, and join the Gila Valley Freedom Band for a non-commercial, simple morning stroll.

6:00 AM – Community Pancake Breakfast: The Eastern Arizona Historical Society and the Town of Pima are serving up a classic breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon.

7:00 AM – 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament: Head to the Thatcher High School Gym to catch the action presented by Big Buckle Roofing.

10:00 AM – The Official Gila Valley 250 Parade: Downtown Safford takes center stage. This year’s theme, "The Star-Spangled Banner," brings together community floats, local businesses, and first responders rolling straight down Main Street.

Midday Cool Down (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
When the afternoon sun hits peak intensity, the valley is keeping things cool with free admission across local water spots.

EAC Splash Pad Party: Over in Thatcher, the Fire Department kicks things off with a massive spray down, complete with complimentary hot dogs.

Safford Pool Day: Free open swim all afternoon, with hot dogs and chips for the first 200 kids in the door.

Pima Pool Day: Beat the heat with free admission and on-site food available.

The Evening Headliners
The celebration shifts to the new soccer fields at the Graham County Fairgrounds as the sun goes down.

6:00 PM – Food Trucks & Community: Grab dinner from the local food truck lineup and score complimentary popsicles while supplies last.

6:30 PM – JustServe Awards: A meaningful presentation honoring the local volunteers who make our community run.

7:00 PM – Live Music by the ZGF Band: The energy ramps up on the Community Stage with a mix of dance music, party favorites, and crowd-pleasing hits.

8:30 PM (Dusk) – The Freeport-McMoRan Fireworks Spectacular: The pinnacle of the Gila Valley 250. Settle in for a massive sky-show celebrating two and a half centuries of independence.

9:00 PM – Encore Concert: Don't pack up the lawn chairs just yet. After the grand finale, the ZGF Band returns to the stage for a late-night encore set to keep the party going.
